A turn-based strategy game about pirate ships

Tortuga - A Pirate's Tale is a turn-based game in which the player gets to control a fleet of pirate ships and must do battle with other sea-faring vessels in a war of strategy and upgrades. There are a number of customization options, including the ability to create a custom pirate with which to sail under.

The game takes place in the Caribbean seas during a time when piracy on the seas was rife, much like the setting of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. However, the gameplay is more akin to something like Civilization VI due to the turn-based nature of the gameplay.

Sail the high seas as a feared pirate

Tortuga - A Pirate's Tale starts the player out as a lowly pirate who must work their way up to become one of the most feared pirates in the Caribbean ocean. Along the way, the player will be able to build their individual skillset, upgrade their fleet of fearsome pirate ships, and engage in tactical naval battles.

Roleplay and ship management

Beyond the strategy and tactics of battle, there are other aspects to the gameplay that the player will need to contend with. There are roleplay elements to the player’s character themselves, with the ability to level up over 35 skills. The player will also have to meet their crew’s various needs to avoid a mutiny.

A solid turn-based strategy game

Tortuga - A Pirate's Tale doesn’t do a great deal that hasn’t been done before in turn-based strategy games, but it does offer a solid experience set within a detailed depiction of piracy in the Caribbean during the “Golden Age of Piracy” (a period roughly between 1650 and 1730).

  • Pros

    • Bright, colorful visuals, thanks to the detailed rendering of the Caribbean
    • A range of activities to participate in, such as raids and battles
    • Ability to upgrade the fleet to improve the combat ability
    • Over 25 hours of gameplay in quests for the player to complete
  • Cons

    • No multiplayer combat modes or online play
